Getting closer to VAP

BCPL is getting closer to our annual Volunteer Appreciation night! This year is all cowboys and yodeling....yep yodeling. You don't want to miss it! Or all that great food :) Look for it this April 27th at 6:00pm. And, if you are in the market for some great book finds, don't forget the annual Friends of the Library booksale is the day after, the mini sale, on April 28th. So don't go spending all your moolah until you check out the Friends booksale!

In the meantime, our volunteers are keeping this library shipshape and we are so thankful! Special thanks to all our shelvers as spring reading has jumped, and to our paperback book volunteers for keeping up witht he new arrivals, and to our homework volunteers helping more kids with all that math, and of course to our BDC volunteers who keep plugging away at the endless projects we hope to share with the public. You guys are simply wonderful!

doing well and willingly the tasks at hand-namely,

being aware of another's needs and doing something about it."

Thoughts on Volunteering...

Reading some new blogs today and saw another notice for the Red Cross Blood Drive for the Beaufort Area. Great thing to volunteer for as that is always a need.

Bet there are many other needs in your community that are met with volunteers.

Hmmm let's brainstorm:

Libraries Beaufort County Library
Police Departments Beaufort Police Department
Firefighters Beaufort Firefighters
Hospitals Beaufort Memorial Hospital
Schools Beaufort School System
Food Banks Lowcountry Food Bank
Senior Services Senior Services of Beaufort
Tutoring Beaufort Branch Homework Tutoring
Animal Shelters Beaufort Animal Shelter
Hospices Caroline Hospice

Yep.....plenty of opportunities.

If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else.

~Booker T. Washington

Service is never a simple act; it's about sacrifice for others and about accomplishment for ourselves, about reaching out, one person to another, about all our choices gathered together as a country to reach across all our divides.

~Former President George Bush

Ever wonder how much of a difference a volunteer makes? I know, it seems rather broad doesn't it? But I was reminded of it today upon arriving to work to see our shelving carts empty and a whole entire shelf of books to be repaired completely empty.

How cool is that?

I tell you, it made our staff happy. It made me happy. And our volunteers...well we try to make them happy too because they are part of the essential backbone of our library system.

So go on, find a volunteer nearest you and say thank you. And when you've done that, think about becoming a volunteer yourself. It takes so little to make such a huge difference.

VAP: Go on...Be Thankful!

This year we have over 150 volunteers at our library to say thank you to. Each year, we try to do just that by throwing our annual Volunteer Appreciation Party (VAP) during National Volunteer Week in April.

Every year is a new theme and employees at the library get together to present the latest comedy sketch as our special way of saying: U ROCK! Volunteers and library employees have a chance to mingle, chat, eat great food and laugh at the antics of the staff as we let them know just where we are with their fantastic assistance.

It's just a heckuva lot of fun and this year get yourselves ready for Beaufort Branch Library to present: WBCPL: A Cowboy Radio Roundup

Gear up cowboys and practice your yodeling...yep yodeling cause this year's production will make you laugh until it hurts...especially after all that food!

Ain't life swell!

It's a great new year and another great opportunity to get out and do something for your community! Be a volunteer cause the world needs more caring folks who want to help.

You can volunteer in all kinds of neat ways and one of those happens to be at your local library.

If you are interested please click on this LINK for more. Remember, we have five different branches so wherever you are, Hilton Head, Lobeco, Bluffton, St. Helena or downtown Beaufort...we need you!

Paul Revere earned his living as a silversmith.
But what do we remember him for?
His volunteer work. All activism is volunteering in that it's done above and beyond earning a living and deals with what people really care passionately about.
Remember, no one gets paid to rebel. All revolutions start with volunteers.

At the end of our life our questions are simple:
Did I live fully? Did I love well?

we can start now,
start slowly changing the world!
How lovely that everyone, great and small,

can make a contribution
toward introducing justice straight away."
